As UGC draft ‘Curriculum and credit framework for four-year undergraduate programmes’ states to give ‘honour’ degree to a four year undergraduate

Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that Delhi University will award undergraduate ‘honours’ degrees to students who choose to study for three years. Students will now receive an undergraduate honours degree only after completing a four-year study, according to new rules issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in a draft. These requirements are outlined in a draft named “Curriculum and credit framework for four-year undergraduate programmes.”

The draft, which is expected to be announced on Monday, has been created in conformity with the National Education Policy (NEP). While DU’s new Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) would be implemented in the academic year 2022-23, Mr Singh stated that the institution will follow a scheme agreed by its academic bodies for current academic session. “We will also allow the student to earn an honours degree after three years. In August, our academic bodies accepted our regulations, which we will obey “said Singh.

The Executive Council (EC), the university’s highest decision-making body, authorised an Undergraduate Curriculum Framework-2022 (UGCF-2022) developed by a NEP Cell in February. The FYUP provides qualifications based on the amount of years a student has completed. Students will receive a certificate for one year, a diploma for two years, and the option of a three or four-year honours course. A year of research is included in the four-year programme. It also provides students with several entry and exit choices.

If they leave before three years, they will be permitted to return within three years after their departure and will have seven years to complete their degree. According to the document, the FYUP curriculum should include main stream courses, minor stream courses, courses from other fields, and language and skill courses. Environmental education, comprehending India, digital and technical solutions, health and wellness, yoga instruction, and sports and fitness will also be covered.

Students can choose to continue with their major or change it at the end of the second semester. They will also be able to pursue a UG with a single or double major. “For the 3-year or 4-year UG degree to be granted a single major, a student must achieve a minimum of 50% credits from the major discipline,” as stated in the document.
