Enrollment of women increases in IIT to 20 percent in 2021

As UGC is providing special scholarships for girls to encourage them to pursue higher education

Female enrollment in undergraduate courses at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has climbed from 8% in 2016 to 20% in 2021, according to Ministry of Education data (MoE). In response to a question in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar stated that there has been a constant improvement in the enrollment of female students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses.

He said, “Supernumerary seats were created to increase female enrolment in undergraduate programmes at IITs, increasing female enrolment from 8% in 2016 to 20% in 2021-22. Similarly, the proportion of girls enrolled in NITs has risen to about 22.1 percent in 2021-22.”

To encourage female students to pursue higher study and research, the University Grants Commission offers specific post-graduate scholarships throughout the country. Similarly, the All India Council for Technical Education is awarding 10,000 scholarships to female students studying technical education. The number of female students enrolled in STEM degrees has climbed from 41.97 lakh in 2016-17 to 43.87 lakh in 2020-21, according to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) Report.

Every year, the University Grants Commission will publish an announcement for UGC Scholarship 2023 for PG Students on its National Scholarship Portal, https://scholarships.gov.in. Candidates interested in applying for one of four scholarships may visit the website of the University Grants Commission, MHRD. All interested students can apply for a UGC PG scholarship programme for various PG courses at scholarships.gov.in. Candidates should also review the official notification, which is available at ugc.ac.in.

For college and university students, the UGC offers four scholarship programmes: the Ishan Uday Special Scholarship for the North Eastern Region (UGC Ishan Uday or UGC NER), the PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child (UGC single girl child scholarship), the PG Scholarship for University Rank Holders, and the PG Scholarship for SC, ST Students Pursuing Professional Courses. Scholarship applications must be filed through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.
